Rare! Lot of 2. 1) 1863 assessment receipt for the company received from George W. Swan (who served as the president). $1250. Signed by the secretary (Squires). Receipt printed by Towne & Bacon. 3.5 x 8.25" 2) 1872 letter and cover to George Swan regarding the Excelsior mine. He will "examine the condition of the mine tailings so that when you come down we may know very nearly how the thing is. Envelope is stamped with the Placerville office for the railroad. In addition to this railroad, Swan also operated toll roads on the way to Tahoe from Placerville. This letter hints that the railroad may have been exploring mining prospects too. The railroad was incorporated in 1862. Construction began in 1863 from Folsom junction of Sacramento Valley Railroad towards Placerville. Competed with the Central Pacific Railroad in the mid and late 1860s to be the first railroad to cross the Sierra and reach the mines on the Comstock. Reached Shingle Springs in 1865. In an effort to make sure they were no beaten across the Sierra, the Central Pacific RR purchased the Sacramento Valley Railroad and halted further progress. The 26.2-mile P&SVRR (Folsom Junction to Shingle Springs) had operated as its own company from August 1864 to July 21, 1871. But the mortgage on the property of the P&SVRR was foreclosed on May 21, 1869 and sold to William Alvord. On July 21, 1871, title was conveyed to Alvord who, on the same day conveyed the title to Huntington, Stanford, and Hopkins. They later formed the Sacramento & Placerville Railroad, incorporated April 19, 1877, and by deed of sale dated May 28, 1877, transferred the property of the P&SVRR into the new S&PRR corporation.
