NoNorthern Plains fringed beaded peace pipe (Chanupa)bag. 23" x 6". The beading is all intact, white, turquoise, red, black, light blue seed beads. Hide is well worn, and there is a very small tear by the opening. The turquoise seed beads used were more prevelant with the Southern Cheyenne and Lakota. The bag is beaded on both sides.
Pipe bags were objects of prestige, fashioned with pride for the loved one. Interestingly, the basic form of the bag, with slight variations, was the same throughout the Plains & Plateau. In the Central Plains, there frequently are quilled slats beneath the main body of the bag and fringe is always attached to the quilled slats. Other times there are no quilled slats, only fringe. That is the case with this bag. The top fringe is curled (Accomplished by wetting the strings and twisting), while the bottom fringe is straight cut.
