Issued and cancelled stock for the Porter Gold and Silver Mining Co, Butte Co., Cal. Incorporated 1863 in San Francisco, issued to S.L. Johnson for 25 shares, October 6, 1863, signed by Sidney L. Johnson as president and V. B. Post as secretary. Lithography by Drouaillet, SF. Red ink manuscript cancellation across face. Cert #23. Original stub still attached.
The mines in Butte County were generally centered around Table Mountain, which has a basalt layer that covers an important gold bearing Tertiary gravel. Important companies of the period included the Oregon Gulch, Cherokee Blue Gravel. Other mines were located at Forbestown, Wyandotte, Bangor and a few other locales. Raymond's 1867 treatise does not mention the Porter, even though it discusses the active mines of the 1864 period.
