Letter describing a very interesting land proposition to W.J. Harris, prominent Nevada banking figure, from Jeremiah Collins, Land Attorney and President of The Collins Land Co. (in Helena). Collins mentions unsurveyed land estimates for Western states and says he "has control of the largest block of Sioux Half Breed scrip in existence...the full equivalent of Valentine." He offers that for "anyone desiring to locate several hundred acres of unsurveyed land... I can make a very attractive proposition." This proposition was probably not valid, and thus a "scam." Collins was the largest dealer of scrip in the United States. Sioux Half Breed scrip was issued in 1857 to mixed-blood individuals to extinguish their title to land originally reserved to them by the 1830 Treaty of Prairie du Chien. The scrip could be used to locate land anywhere in the public domain. From the Gordon Harris Estate.
