This postal cover hand written by Genl. William Tecumseh Sherman to his eight year old son Master William T. Sherman Jr. just prior to his ninth birthday living with Mrs. Sherman in Lancaster, Ohio. The General would have been at Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee finishing the battle of Shiloh. Later in the fall of 1863, young "Willie" would be with the family near Young's Point, Louisiana with his father and the 13th United States Regulars. Members of the 13th took a liking to young "Willie" and referred to him as Sergeant. While enroot to Memphis by steamship, young Willie took ill and a Dr. Roller recognized the symptoms of Typhoid Fever. By the evening of Oct. 3rd Willie would lose his life to typhoid. "Mrs. Sherman, Minnie, Lizzie, and Tom, were with him at the time, and we all, helpless, and overwhelmed , saw him die". (Personal Memoirs of Genl. W. T. Sherman, 1890, vol.1, p. 373, 376.) 4 1/2 in. X 3 in. three cent postage stamp.
