A collection of 4 postcards featuring the illustrations of Louis Wain. Three are used with postmarks c1905-05. These are anthropomorphized cat designs (cats doing human activities) of which Wain was famous for. Born in 1860, in London, United Kingdom, Wain studied at the West London School of Art. From the 1880s until the outbreak of the first world war, the ‘Louis Wain cat’ was hugely popular. He produced hundreds of drawings & paintings a year for periodicals & books, including Louis Wain's Annual which ran from 1901 to 1921. His work also appeared on postcards & advertising, & he made brief ventures into ceramics & animated cartoons. But, mental illness ran in Wain's family. Because of a poor business sense he never made much money & lived in poverty. His cats became more bizarre as his schizophrenia progressed, & some have called them the precursor of psychedelic art. In June 1924, he was certified insane & spent the last 15 years of his life in institutions. The artist died on July 4, 1939 in St. Albans, United Kingdom. Today, his works are in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. [
