Lot of 17 from two important Carson City banks in the 19th century. Important signatures! 1) The Carson City Savings Bank. Eight issued certificates of deposit (in US gold coin) (1875-76) with the great vignette of an 1870 gold coin. Also, an 1884 Original of Exchange (currency) signed by T.R. Hofer. Plus an unissued but desirable stock for the bank with copper foil vignette of bald eagle. 2) The Bullion and Exchange Bank (which took over for the Carson City Savings Bank). Rare group of seven issued stock certificates (1887-1901). Includes pieces issued to prominent Carson citizens Trenmor Coffin and JP Woodbury (who operated the Brunswick Mill). Signed by important figures such as T.R. Hofer as cashier/secretary and three different presidents: Jacob Klein, H.M. Gorham, and Richard Kirman. Hofer served as 7th superintendent to the Carson City Mint (the B&E bank later had an office in the mint). Klein founded the Bullion & Exchange Bank and later had interests in the Carson Gas Works and Carson Brewery. Gorham worked in mines in Gold Hill (like the Yellow Jacket) before also running the Savage Mine. Richard Kirman Sr. became mayor of Reno and later governor of Nevada. All stocks are pen cancelled.
