Published in 1865 by J.H Bufford & Sons of Boston. Bufford`s firm produced lively, accomplished images in many forms, including sheet music, city views, marine views and landscapes, book illustrations, reproductions of paintings, commercial depictions of factories, and contemporary genre views; . . . [and] lithographic portraits copied from daguerreotypes. Artists who worked for Bufford included Francis D`Avignon and Leopold Grozelier. Clients included music publisher William H. Oakes.
The predecessors of cartes de visite were calling cards. During the 1850s, it was the custom to present one`s calling card at the time of a social visit. Families would often provide decorative baskets or trays to receive calling cards from visitors. During the 1850s, there were sporadic reports of photographers in the U.S. or Europe preparing photographic calling cards, in which the portrait replaces the engraved name. Johnson served as President after Abraham Lincoln`s assassination from 1865-1869. In 1868, he came within one vote of being removed from office during impeachment hearings. The card has small stains, name of the subject handwritten on the back and is in very good condition.
