Authenticated free franked postal cover signed by President John Tyler during the time he served as 10th President of the United States (1841-45). Addressed in his handwriting to "Mrs. (Dolley) Madison, Washington, D.C.," the wife of James Madison, the fourth president of the United States. Tyler had frequented Mrs. Madison's parties. During her husband's presidency she was renowned for being The White House hostess, was credited for creating bipartisan cooperation by inviting members of both parties to her social functions, and was still a popular figure in the capital in her later years. Postmarked at Winchester, VA in Sep 1844. Penciled annotations noting date in another hand on verso. Most of the red wax seal intact. Archival silked for preservation. Certificate of Authenticity from Signature House, Bridgeport, WV. Tyler was the first vice president to succeed to office on death of a president. After his compromise movement failed in 1861, Tyler served in the CSA Senate before his death. [ 1844
