This 1871 pass is issued to Stanton from president Buffum. The line formed in 1865. Buffum was elected president in 1868. He was replaced in 1871 by Gov. Sprague (the year of the pass). The line was primarily a freighting concern until 1871 when they put to passenger boats into service (again the year of our pass). A tragic event in 1873 ended this experiment and in the Stonington Steamship Company merged with the Providence and New York Steamship Company to form the Providence and Stonington Steamship Company/ Another very nice looking and quite rare pass.
