Certificate is a subscription to a publication, Constitutional Society of the United States, signed by journalist and President Charles Chauncey Burr, friend of Edgar Allen Poe, issued in 1870. Hosea T. Clark purchased $25 worth of subscriptions. Beautifully engraved with vignette of three women, vessels on the water, buildings and a basket of fruit. Charles Chauncey Burr (1817–1883) was an American journalist, author, and publisher. A native of Maine, he became an intimate friend of Edgar Allan Poe and his family, and published a number of magazines and newspapers. Burr helped Poe both physically and financially. Even after Poe's death, Burr published a number of pro-Poe articles which boosted his popularity. 10.5" x 6.5" certificate, also signed by Secretary R. W. Wright, is in fine condition with slight folds.
