Stock Certificate from the Pueblo & State Line Railroad Co. Incorporated in 1887 in the State of Colorado. Early certificate number 10 issued on March 8, 1888 to A. K. Cale(?). Signed by president David Kelen(?) and Joe Smith. Printed by Woodward & Tiernan Ptg. Co. St. Louis. Size 10.625 by 8.125 inches. Nice. Not cancelled. Vignette of a train coming into the station, ornate border, embossed seal at bottom left . Pin holes top left, otherwise excellent condition. Signatures on reverse dated April 18, 1888. A. H. Lealey, witnessed by Guy Phillips. The Pueblo and State Line Railroad opened December 18, 1887 and as of the date of this certificate, it ran 151 miles from the Kansas State line to Pueblo. (Poor's Manual of the Railroads of the United States V. 22, 1889) It was part of the Main Line of the Jay Gould's Missouri Pacific Railroad in Kansas and was turned over to the Missouri Pacific for operation on December 24th, 1887. This section of railroad posed strong competition for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe RR. Jay Gould has been widely referenced as the "quintessential 19th century robber baron" and the "Railroad wrecker", but few argue that he was perhaps the most influential 19th Century financier of the development of the Colorado Railroads.
