These items have been voluntarily removed for cultural and historic preservation in cooperation with, and under guidance of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. While specific aspects of the laws governing collection of artifacts can be complex, it is important to understand some basic principles:

1) Nobody can collect artifacts from federal or Indian lands without a specific permit or authority to do so, even professional archaeologists.
2) Regardless of land jurisdiction, including private land, all items removed from graves are illegal to buy or sell.
3) Artifacts found on Federal land belong to the Government. There are no exceptions, including arrowheads.
4) Likewise, all artifacts found on Tribal lands belong to the Tribe. Individual Tribal members do not have the right to sell artifacts that came from the Reservation.
5) Should you have any questions or information, please call BIA Cultural Resource Office at (505) 228-8053.
