Pair of pyrite sand or sun dollars from Ohio. Pyrite sun dollars look like sand dollars but are not at all, and are actually much heavier. These approximate 3.5" and 2.5" diameter perfectly formed disks, also known as miner's dollars, are formations of pyrite found in coal mines. They are formed when the weight of overlying sediment causes pyrite crystals to grow laterally, resulting in flat concretions. Pyrite suns are found in Ohio, as well as in coal mines near Sparta, Illinois and in China. In Ohio, pyrite is found in black shales and coals from the Middle Devonian to Pennsylvanian periods.
