Bradley collection. Projectile points from the Chattahoochee River area at Roswell Georgia, collected c1940-50's. This collection of points is mostly quartz. Other points include obsidian and Flint. The collection numbers approximately 120 pieces, and includes some very crude projectile points. This lot takes on additional significance when we realize that America's first Gold Rush took place in Georgia in 1828 which displaced the Cherokee. The Cherokee sought hard rock to make projectile points. Quartz, one of the hardest minerals from the region, is found tin the metamorphic rocks of the Appalachian gold belt. There is no significant mineralization visible in the points, but it is notable that the quartz points probably came from the same geologic region as ultimately the gold did. These may have been traded with other groups along the way. Quartz points take on additional significance, as Native Americans were searching the local region for rocks hard enough to make sturdy projectile points for sustained use. Quartz, while hard, has no cleavage pattern, while flint or chert has a chonchoidal fracture pattern, easily conducive to the flaking process necessary for quality points. A very nice collection of historical importance. Date: Location: Georgia HWAC # 51062
