Three unissued RN-G dividend checks for the Quicksilver Mining Company. Checks have New York dateline as that was the location of corporate offices. Drawn on the Mechanics National Bank. 188-. One of the three has a reduced left edge. Located 12 miles south of current downtown San Jose, New Almaden was first mined in 1845 for its cinnabar (mercury), making it California's earliest mining operation. The mercury was needed for silver mining in Mexico. The Ohlone Indians had used the cinnabar for body paint. The Quicksilver Mining Company assumed ownership of previous mines in 1863. By 1865, the community had 1,800 residents. Mercury was the crucial ingredient for gold extraction in California and silver extraction on the Comstock, until the discovery of cyanide.
