Quintera Mining Co. Ltd., Pictorial Token, c.1905. This is a famous pictorial mining token. Obverse: (standing miner with bull head counterstamp); Reverse: Quintera / Mg. Co. Ld. / 100 (centavos). Copper, octagonal, 32 mm. Situated at La Aduana, just west of Alamos, Sonora, Mexico, this mine was discovered in colonial days by a peon named Ouintero. After three other owners, it was sold in 1894 to the Franco-Egyptian Bank of Paris. This company ran it until 1909 when work was suspended. When a local newspaper revealed that the company was illegally paying its workers with scrip, the state governor stopped the use of tokens. This and other illegal practices brought an end to the operation of the Quintera mine. The company's metal tokens, manufactured by L. H. Moise of San Francisco, are usually found with a counterstamp of a bull's head. Douglas McDonald Collection.
