1890. This is a sad tale indeed. George Hawkins was a V&T trained engineer. He work in the Bodie mines and mills, ran the 'Rocket' on Mono Lake, invented a sophisticated system to track the sun during the 1889 solar eclipse, etc. When the state promoted artesian wells, he purchased his own well digging equipment and partnered with Richard Kirman to dig water wells. Among others he dug wells for the Orphan's Home in Carson and Winter's Ranch in Washoe Valley. Lot of three. 1) September 16, 1890 quote from Hawkins to the Stewart Indian School to dig an artesian wells. It is on Hawkins letterhead for the Cigar Store he ran in downtown Carson City. 2) Contract drawn up on September 27, 1890 between Hawkins and the Indian School. 3) 1900 letter from the Department of the Interior at Washington D. C. saying they will not fulfill the contract as Hawkins (who was killed digging the well) had not satisfactorily dug the well. It is addressed to his wife! Extensive background on artesian wells in Nevada, on George Hawkins, the story of his death digging this well. State: Nevada City: Carson City, Ormsby Date: 1890 HWAC# 99453
