This is a Warrant for Claggett serving in the second session of the Territorial House in 1862. It is for $280 which Claggett assigns on the back to pay another person. This is an important signature as Claggett was Twain's closest friend while he was working for the Territorial Enterprise in Virginia City. Twain knew Claggett as a young lawyer in Keokuk, Iowa. They stayed in the same boarding house. They travelled to San Francisco for a spree (wine, women and very expensive hotels) when they made a few dollars, probably from mining. Claggett and Twain were among the earliest miners to arrive at Unionville during the Humboldt County rush. He would find his way into "Roughing It" as "Young Claggett."
