No. 643, issued in 1874 to N.H. Hatchkiss, esq., traveling agent for C & O RR. Signed by supt. Andrews. Pass is soiled, and has paper/glue residue on reverse from being attached in an album. The Raleigh and Augusta Air Line Railroad dates back to the early 1850s, when the line was chartered by the North Carolina General Assembly as the Chatham Railroad in February 1851. In 1871, it changed its name to the Raleigh and Augusta Air Line Railroad. They wanted to build a line from Raleigh to Augusta, Georgia, through Columbia, South Carolina. However, it never progressed past the North Carolina-South Carolina state line, where it met the Palmetto Railroad. (Potter Collection) Date: Location: North Carolina HWAC# 59194
