Geologists and prospectors often use aerial photos to look for anomalies, then , with knowledge of local geology, go into the field to investigate. These three gold nuggets were found in such a manner.
Randsburg is home to the famous Yellow Aster Mine. Not only was it the largest and richest gold mine in Southern California, but in modern times more than three million ounces of gold were mined from three separate open pits.
With a gold deposit this size, gold nugget enthusiasts have long wandered the hills and valleys for miles around. Today, there are at least two different private "gold camps", where prospectors can go, camp, and pay for the right to look for nuggets. But they are indeed found in many other places.
Several other lots in this Collection discuss a few of these locations.
These nuggets were found from the sighting of a "red spot" and subsequent prospecting. They weigh 4.9g and are about 1/4" each. [ Randsburg California
