Antique strong box/safe measures 24"x 15"x 15" with working combination lock. Combination lock code included. Heavy, iron/steel construction finished in dark green on outside and black inside. The two squares panels on the lid were originally detailed with a gold rectangular outline that is still partially visible. It appears there was some lettering on the front panel that is no longer visible. Manufacturer name is printed inside safe door: Victor Safe and Lock Co. Cincinnati, Ohio 1918, a well-known award winning safe manufacturer that operated in the late1880s to early to mid 1900s. A number is imprinted on the lid handle, possibly the serial number for the Victor Safe model. The combination lock is stamped Yale & Towne Stanford, CT with patent information on the dial. The locking mechanism still operates flawlessly and dial spins smoothly. Yale & Town Mfg Co. was founded in 1868 by Linus Yale, Jr, inventor of the pin tumbler lock, and Henry R. Towne. The company has a long history and was one of the leading employers in the Stanford area for many years. This same model of Victor strong box has been referenced as both a Railroad strong box and Stagecoach strongbox and could quite possibly have been a Wells Fargo safe at one time. This strong box is dated 1918, the same year the federal government forced Wells Fargo and other private express companies to form the federally governed American Railway Express Company. Additionally, the box is identical to a known U.S. Army WWI Quartermaster Corps Strong Box we found in our research. This particular safe was reportedly purchased at a major estate sale in Colton, California over 40 years ago. Colton is considered the home town of the Earp Family of Wild West fame. This safe is in very good condition and waiting for your valuables. See photos for more details.
