Lot of 4. 1) 1887 letterhead for CE. De Forest's Metallurgical Works, Redding, California. "Manufacturer of the De Forest Arastra." Letter to Eugene Smith at Fort Maginnis. Discusses Smith's Mining & Scientific Press of Jan. 29, 1887 article looking for a small and reliable quartz mill. De Forest is offering up his arastra. 2-3) Billhead and Assay Office certificate for WN Jehu, Assayer and Chemist at 628 Montgomery Street, San Francisco, 1898. "Successor to JT Evans." For assays done for Thos. Wells of the Columbus Mining Company. Free gold and sulphurets. A Mariposa County, California mining company. 4) Auburn Assay Office Business Card with fees for 32 elements - reverse has a poem on miners. Located at 1296 Lincoln Way (Odd Fellows Bldg.) in Auburn, CA, the card is 5 Ω X 3" and contains the assay fees and sample requirements. The poem on the reverse laments the poor results of eastern educated mining vs. the experienced miners.
