Check issued from Geo. T. Clark & Co., Bankers. Clark, Gruber & Co. were some of the first bankers in Colorado, issuing gold pieces made from Colorado Gold Rush (Pike's Peak) gold dust. Their bank in Denver was the predecessor to the US Mint office, which bought their office and equipment in 1863. Though George Clark shared a name with a founder, he was not related. He did, however, work for the firm when it was in Denver, acting as cashier and agent for gold dust. He bought the firm's bank in Central City in 1865. This check paid for exchange of 75 cents.
