Bullion Receipt No. 406, Gold Hill Assay Office. Received from the Savage Mining Co., per Chas. Forman, two packages from the Piute Mill. Signed Conrad Wiegand as Assayer per C. Shane. Two cent adhesive revenue stamp attached upper left. Pinhole and small tear on left edge. Measures 3.75" x 9.5" Conrad Wiegand founded the Gold Hill Assay Office only five months before with financing from William Sharon. His life in Gold Hill was full of conflict and tragedy. He was even mentioned by Mark Twain in Roughing It. Weigand's death in 1880 was ruled a suicide, but foul play was suspected.
