Manuscript document dateline Fort Bridger, Dec. 14, 1868. For a $225 deposit by Ira E. Barley(?) subject to his order. Signed W.A. Carter by J. Carter. W.A. Carter was the post trader at Fort Bridger beginning in 1858. Along with his family, Carter lived at the fort, rebuilding and stocking it and eventually becoming Wyoming's first millionaire. The fort was located in a site originally in Utah Territory, later Uinta County, Wyoming. It became a vital resupply point for wagon trains on the Oregon Trail, California Trail, and Mormon Trail. The Army established a military post here in 1858 during the Utah War, until it was finally closed in 1890. 5.25 x 7.5" Folds, some toning. One adhesive revenue stamp attached.
