Rare oil painting on masonite by Frederick J. Behre (1863-1942) Image of Navajo weaving and 3 baskets. Framed 23.75" x 30.5".



Frederick John Behre was born in San Francisco and initially worked with Hubert Howe Bancroft in Berkeley as an artist-designer. He moved to Southern California in the 1880s, and became active in Pasadena art circles. In the 1890s, he collaborated with Gutzon Borglum on a painting of Mission San Juan Capistrano. In 1893, Behre founded the Artists’ League of Southern California. His work exhibited throughout California, including at the Golden Gate International Exhibition of 1939. Behre is currently featured at the Orange County (CA) Museum. His body of work includes rare still lifes in oil.
