This is an Alabama Claims U.S. Treasury draft issued in 1889 payable to various Americans for their losses as a result of attacks by Confederate raiders by the ships Alabama, Florida and Shenandoah, built in the United Kingdom. These drafts were made from the $15.5 million Geneva Award, in which the U.K. agreed to pay reparations to the U.S. as they were partly liable for building these ships for the Confederate States. The vignette at the left is of Salmon P. Chase. The Geneva Award was the first agreement of it's kind between sovereign powers and was a precursor of the World Court and the United Nations. The check was issued to John Kehew for $3.20 and signed by J.W. Whelpley, first asst. Treasurer of the United States. In excellent condition.
