Pumping Association, Agency of the Bank of California. Issued on July 10, 1890 to the Virginia & Truckee Railroad for $398.80. Signed by William Sharon as Chairman. Cut cancel and small stain upper right. Sharon was one of the most powerful men on the Comstock, running the Bank of California for William Ralston. The bank made a fortune by loaning to mining companies and then seizing their properties when they defaulted. Sharon was instrumental in the creation of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad, which he wanted to connect the Comstock with the ore mills he owned along the Carson River (with Ralston). Later in life, he also served as a U.S. senator. The Gold Hill Pumping Association, formed in February of 1890 by Sharon and R.P. Morrow, was made up of thirteen mining corporations who provided capitol to "free the Gold Hill mines from water." Unfortunately, the ore was not of high enough value to compensate for the huge expenses.
