Lot of 3. 1) Best is very rare pictorial check for HH Flagg, banker in Gold Hill, issued in 1872 to JC Carroll & Co. Signed by HH Flagg. Allegorical vignette at left with adhesive revenue stamp. Folds, stains, trimmed borders. Flagg took over the banking business of Maynard & Flood that had been formed in 1862 and ended when Flood was sent to jail. When Maynard returned to Gold Hill in 1872, the Bank of HH Flagg failed soon after. 2) Two Certificates of Deposit for gold coin at the Bank of California in Gold Hill. Issued in 1870 and 1872. Each has one Nevada revenue stamp and one US IR. Each has condition issues. One has a tape repaired separation. The other has portions of the right border missing. The Bank of California was an important player in the 1860s for the Comstock. William Sharon was sent to manage the Comstock branch in 1864. The bank established a monopoly by loaning to mining companies at 2% (versus 3-5%) and then seizing the mining properties when the loans defaulted. Eventually, Fair, Mackay, Flood, & O'Brien unseated Sharon and the Bank of California as the controlling force on the Comstock.
