Really rare photograph of a modernized hydraulic mining system being used after it was outlawed. Hydraulic mining was banned in California in 1884 because it was detrimental to the environment and because farmers complained about water issues. This photograph is of the Malakoff Mine which was active in the early 1900s. There is a hay dam visible in this photograph which was probably used to mitigate tailings. Photograph is 5.5 x 7.75, mount is 7.75 x 10.75, very good condition. City: State:California Date: c. 1895-1910
