Issued in 1865 to Benjamin F. Bayley for one share at $100 each. Signed by C.H. Sanborn as president and Bayley as treasurer. Twenty five cent revenue affixed at the top stamped with the company backstamp Feb. 23, 1865. The Civil War (1861-1865) caused a shortage of whiskey. Not only were many men drawn from their day jobs to fight in the war, but many battles were fought in the major American whiskey distilling regions (Colleen Graham, about.com). This certificate was issued just over a month before the civil war ended. Uncancelled. EF.

The New York Herald of Saturday, September 21, 1867 reported on the front page that President Sanborn and others were indicted for trying to avoid income tax on barrels of bourbon in New York City. State: City: Date:1865 ID#44271
