Rare Snider .577-450 2nd model conversion pistol. 1858 Enfield V.R. ROYAL STAMP. Excellent shape with graduated adjustable sight. This is a large bore rifled pistol converted from the Enfield muskets of 1858. Converted by the Royal Armories in London approximately 1869. It is thought these pistols were made for the East India Company, although that has not been verified. Adapted in 1866 as a breech-loading conversion of the .577 Enfield single shot swing-over breach block, which was a modified percussion lock originally. The Mark III" IMPROVED" locking breach was a "new manufacture...safer to shoot." There were several modifications over the years to the Enfield. This pistol represents the last and best modification of the series as it has the final and strongest 'trap door" arrangement and a rifled barrel. Definitely a two-handed black powder cartridge pistol of the 19th century. Excellent shape overall with nice furniture wood and all markings clear and crisp.
