According to Davis, the History of Nevada: "After its discovery in 1876, ward grew rapidly to 1500 people within a year. The silver-lead ores, remarkable for their richness, were successfully processed in the furnace, which was built by Martin White Company. Handsome dividends were paid for a short time, but the depreciation in lead value and the difficulty to obtain fluxing material, they had to close the furnace. The company was compelled to purchase lead ores from the Hunter District and after a few, bad investments into a twenty stamp mill, the holdings were taken over by Nevada United Mines Company in 1906 [Vol.II, p.1046].
+Includes a partial document, a half page letter head of the Pleaides Mining Company, located in Ward District, White Pine County, Nevada from 187-, with a handwritten note on the back: "Look over my letters to Bradstreet(?) which the enclosed is a reply".
