Very early Van Wyck receipt (he was still in Virginia City). Many of these are known to exist but this seems to be the earliest and perhaps the only territorial. This receipt is for 1,351 ounces of gold and silver bullion from the Savage Mine via the Granite Mill. According to the Gold Hill News in 1863 the Granite Mill was the only mill in the Nevada Territory made of granite and considered fireproof. Almost as soon as the news of a strike in Esmeralda (Aurora) reached the San Francisco newspapers, Van Wyck headed there to open an assay office. He was the principal in the firm of Van Wyck & Winchester and later Van Wyck & Sanchez. By the summer of 1864 he was in Virginia City. According to the Virginia Daily Union of June 3, 1864 he had an office in the Taylor Building. By September of 1865 Van Wyck had moved his assay office to Gold Hill. More background notes on Van Wyck are included. State: Nevada City: Virginia City, Storey Date: HWAC# 99467
