Very rare RN-B16a revenue stamp (red Nevada imprint over federal imprint). Ophir Mill, Bank of California, W.S. Hobart (on left). Dateline Virginia, Nev. Mar. 28th, 1872. Issued to A.S. Benner for $15.75. Signed by Comstock millionaire James G. Fair. Spindle cancel. Very clean! There were numerous Ophir Mills on the Comstock, including one in Washoe Valley that shutdown in 1866. This check is for the Ophir Mill on the Carson River. This "New Ophir Mill" was located above Dayton and below the Island Mill. In 1865, it had 24 stamps and 15 pans and was processing Yellow Jacket ore. In 1868, it was owned by William Sharon and the Bank of California. From 1873-1883, it operated as a tailings mill and was owned by Fair & Mackay. W.S. Hobart was one of the key lumber suppliers on the Comstock (along with D.L. Bliss) and is the namesake of two towns that are no longer here: Hobart, Nevada (a small camp on the east shore of Lake Tahoe) and Hobart Mills (a lumber camp north of Truckee).[Ref: Ansari] City: Virginia City State: Nevada Date: 1872 HWAC# 78635
