An item we have never seen before, this scrimshaw cup is very nice indeed. Made from carved antique horn. Carving depicts 18th Century British officers in a fort with British troops in a formation watching a nude soldier tied to a cannon carriage while being whipped by 3 black slaves as per Joseph Wall. Inscribed CUT AWAY YOU BLACK B - DAM YOU CUT HIS LIVER OUT. THE CRUEL MURDER OF BENJN ARMSTRONG, IN THE ISLAND OF GOREE, AMERICA BY RECEIVING 800 LASHES BY THE ORDER OF GOVERNER WALL. JULY 10TH, 1782 BY THE BLACKS JOSH WALL. ESQR GOVR. WAS FOUND GUILTY & EXECUTED 28 JANRY 1802.Signed by artist N. Spillman. Beautiful aged ivory-like patina. Includes photocopies of info on Gov. Joseph Wall who was fond of flogging. Armstrong was punished by Wall for alleged mutiny and Armstrong died hours later after 800 floggings. Wall was charged with cruelty but the charges were dropped temporarily as the witness' were not available. Wall was tried for murder on Jan. 20, 1802 at Old Bailey and was convicted and then executed.
