In the early days of Raton, the town was supplied with water from a spring under the rim rock of Barela Mesa the pumping station being situated east of town on Willow creek. This crude system which was put in operation in 1882 was afterward improved by the Santa Fe Railroad. Immediately after the organization of the town in 1891 Dr JJ Shuler organized the Raton Water Company. [History of New Mexico: Its Resources and People, Volume 2] It is still in business today!
