Recollections of California Mining Life, Henry DeGroot, 1884. Primitive Placers and First Important Discovery of Gold. The Pioneers of the Pioneers, Their Fortune and their Fate. Written for the Mining and Scientific Press. 16pp, soft cover, a near mint copy. 6 x 8.5" "Holmes Book Co. business card rubber stamped lightly at bottom center (c1940). Full page illustrations (Anthony & Baker engravings) of California mining life. Kurutz 175. Chas Nahl illustrations. HWAC sold Nahl's personal sketch book and drawings several years ago. DeGroot was an influential gold rush historian, recording the "strikes" at many of the important western camps. He perhaps had a start in the Fraser River Rush, publishing a pamphlet on the district, then off to the Comstock, where he published one of the most important first works on the Comstock. In later years, he published a number of articles in the Mining and Scientific Press, unarguably the most important mining voice on the Pacific Coast. The work here is considered a classic, rare in this condition, and is cited in almost every gold rush bibliography.
