Recollections of Pioneer Work in California: By James Woods. Published San Francisco, Joseph Winterburn 1878, 260 pp. 7.5x4.5, original gilt-lettered green cloth. First Edition. James Woods, a Presbyterian minister, traveled with his wife around Cape Horn to San Francisco in the summer of 1849, and shortly thereafter removed to Stockton, where he established a church for that community. Kurutz notes that "his recollections are much more than an ecclesiastical history, as they give an articulate and human picture of life in that gateway to the Southern Mines...." Cowan p.694; [Gary F. Kurutz]. [Cowan (I), p. 253, (II), p. 694; Howell 50:941; Kurutz 697; Rocq 17257]. Original blind-stamped green cloth, with gold-stamped front cover. Tiny and light spotting to cloth, spine ends and corners a bit bumped, still a near fine copy.
