Rare and early. No. 174. issued for 224 shares to EM Sanford in Dec. 1876. Rare dateline Lake City. Signed by president James Liser and secretary MB Carpenter. Not cancelled. Black border and print, gold seal, and elk vignette. Folds, 3x 1" rear tape repairs, .25" lower seam tear, and toning. Fossett (1880) discusses the Red Cloud Mine located at Mineral Point Mountain near Animas Forks. Adjacent lodes include the Norris, Mastodon, Mineral Point, and Maid of the Mist. It is being worked by the Mineral Mountain Mining Company. This is the same information presented in 1883 in C&L. The corporate officers are different, but the company owns 28 locations, with the Red Cloud being the most important. C&L further pinpoint the location as Red Cloud Gulch, between Houghton and Mineral Point Mountain, Uncompahgre district, San Juan County. [C&L, pg. 652-53]
