In 1965, a California college student, looking for some direction in his life, convinced his dad to go in with him and buy an old building in the historic mining town of Virginia City. There he and some other young San Franciscans opened the Red Dog Saloon with the goal of serving up live music and good food for locals and tourists alike. Over the years it became known as a home for early "hippie" culture, the venue for acid-fueled band The Amazing Charlatans, and the entrance to the music scene of a singer named Janis Joplin in a band called Big Brother and the Holding Company. The Red Dog Saloon served food under this sign claiming "Manhattan Pizza Since 1865." This is the original, red-painted plywood sign, approx. 3.5 x 4 feet with the lower right corner roughly sawn off as it was installed in the Red Dog Saloon. This is more than a pizza sign -- this is a piece of American history, and it can be yours. State: Nevada City: Virginia City Date:
