Tule duck with reed mat. Signed by Steve Allely 9-15-'04. Has white feathers. Approx. 12" L x 5.5" w. In 1924 a team of scientists working on an archaeological excavation in Lovelock Cave Nevada. They unearthed a basket cache containing what are probably the oldest Native American decoys found in North America. A total of thirteen decoys were discovered in the cache made from tule rushes, which were cleverly painted and feathered to represent canvasback drake ducks. The find was carbon dated at approx. 200 years BC. The replica is made to represent the originals as closely as possible. This is a beautiful replica. The Wigwam Restaurant in Fernley, NV was a long time gathering place for members of the Paiute Tribe hosted by their friends Mary and Moe Royels and featured a Great Basin Native Americana museum which is presented in this auction. This is from the historic Wigwam Collection.
