Report of Hon. T. Butler King of California printed by Gideon & Co. in 1850. This report relayed the first official information about the gold rush to the federal government. Thomas Butler King, a Georgia congressman, arrived in California on June 4, 1849, by way of the Isthmus of Panama. It was his purpose in making this extended journey to investigate conditions in California and to give the federal government its first official information on the gold discoveries. While in California, he served as the U. S. Collector of Customs at San Francisco. 72 pages. Good condition in publisher's original wrappers, including the errata slip. Rare in this condition. 5.75 x 9.25 inches.
