Rare and important work on the California gold country (post-Gold Rush) from a very important mining authority. 43 pages. Printed in New Haven, 1865. "Report of the Deep Placers of the South & Middle Yuba, Nevada County, California, in Connection with the Middle Yuba and Eureka Lake Canal Companies. By B. Silliman, M.A., M.D., Professor of General and Applied Chemistry, Yale College." Fabulous overview of the gold country in California. Silliman argues that there is still a vast amount of gold to extracted from deep lying placers by hydraulic washing; that the ridge of land between the Middle and South Yuba is particularly rich; that two water companies, the Middle Yuba/ San Juan Co. and Eureka Lake Water Co., hold the most important rights and should be consolidated; that the "extent of the area to be worked is such that it is not likely to be exhausted in several generations; and no gold can be obtained from it except as the miners purchase water from those Companies owning the water." He states that "this branch of mining is now systematised and involves the outlay of large sums of money in preparatory works of construction, giving steady employment to a stable and industrious population who are mostly owners." Previous owner's name on cover, along with a few notations. Vertical fold. 8.75" x 5.5" City: Nevada County State: California Date: 1865 ID# 34809
