The Somervell Campaign was a response to three predatory raids made by the Mexican army in 1842. President Sam Houston ordered Alexander Somervell to organize a militia and invade Mexico. 683 men arrived in San Antonio ready for glory and plunder. On November 25 the force captured Laredo. But Somervell recognized he did not have the ability to continue and ordered his men to disband and return home by way of the Gonzales. Warnock was in the First Regiment of the South Western Army under the command of James R. Cook. [Texas State Historical Society online] The Republic of Texas inherited from the provisional and ad interim governments a debt estimated at $1.25 million. Postponement of the payment of the bulk of this debt was protracted over a period of eleven years, interest accumulating on it up to July 1, 1850.
