For services and losses on the Santa Fe Expedition. For $350. The Santa Fe expedition was an attempt by some Texans to convince New Mexico to join them and to create trade with the Santa Fe Trail. The expedition was a disaster leading to the surrender of the entire military and merchant force spending time in a prison in Mexico City before being released. Thomas Hancock, a resident of San Antonio, was a member of Dawsonfs Company. He was sentenced to death, but eventually changed to a 10 year imprisonment. He escaped in 1843, but was recaptured. His was released with the Bexar prisoners on March 23, 1844. [Bexar and Dawson Prisoners by Winkler] The Republic of Texas inherited from the provisional and ad interim governments a debt estimated at $1.25 million. Postponement of the payment of the bulk of this debt was protracted over a period of eleven years, interest accumulating on it up to July 1, 1850.
