Fascinating manuscript document dateline Carson City, Aug. 8th, 1864 (territorial). Message is to the territorial auditor, WW Ross, from Governor James Nye. "I am obliged to go to Dayton to Quell a Riot or Vigilance Committee (illegible). Send me one hundred and fifty dollars..." Signed James W. Nye. 11 x 8" A dispute in Dayton, Nevada Territory--likely over mining claims, Civil War political allegiances, or local governance--escalated into a full-blown riot. Reports suggest that armed men gathered threatening violence. Nye rode into Dayton and literally read the Riot Act aloud to the crowd, causing them to disperse! This was a great example of Nye's theatrical and confrontational flair and also helped reinforce federal control in a region still finding its footing.
