Rufus Nelson Leatherman was an Arizona Pioneer; born in 1844 in North Carolina that moved west to Tucson, Arizona in 1869. This RN check for $300 was a good sum of money in 1883 when Rufus decided to sell some of his ranch holdings (2.75 in. X 7.5 in.) He owned a livery stable, served his community as a city Counselman, Mayor, Deputy, and later Sheriff from 1895-1898. A feisty man at 5 ft. 5 in. was a force to be dealt with; he once apprehended two murders in Death Valley, Ca. and brought them back in irons to Arizona. As major, he installed a 5 mph speed limit for horses and carriages in town. It is said that he wore his confederate uniform on special occasions with pride. He later sold his mining interests to the Copper Queen Mining Co.
