The Sweet Home Mine in Alma, Colorado is the source of world's finest crystals of rhodochrosite (manganese carbonate). Originally opened in the 1870's as a silver prospect, the underground mine was worked only sporadically and finally abandoned as a silver venture in 1966, after producing a total of $215,000 in then-current silver prices. The mine was reopened in 1991, by a mining partnership headed by Bryan K. Lees of Collector's Edge Minerals, Inc. to mine solely for the collectible mineral species rhodochrosite. After a rough start, the mineral specimen mining venture turned out to be wildly successful with many superb rhodochrosite specimens being harvested and placed into the top public and private mineral collections in the world. This specimen was found in 2004, the last year of operations, at the Sweet Home Mine. The specimen features several large, cherry-red rhodocrosite crystals and sections of incomplete rhodochrosite crystals on a matrix of needle-like quartz crystals with several metallic sulfide minerals also present. A very colorful specimen. Dimensions (cm): 9.5 H x 12.7 W x 3.8 D. Location: 04-09 Pocket, Watercourse Raise, Sweet Home Mine, Mount Bross, Alma District, Park Co., Colorado, USA
